An app to see your current Layer

Hey everyone. I’ve been using HID Remapper for about a year to avoid using software running in the background that uses Electron. I’m not against software, I just have limited RAM (only 16GB).

One thing I was missing was being able to quickly determine which layer I was on. While I know you can do this with GPIO, I wanted a software version of this in my tray. Thus this new program came along.

It’s called “Layers” and it’s sole purpose is to display your active layer in the tray, and as an un-obtrusive popup. This is the silliest program to me but it helps me out so much.

The way it works is that it takes an empty expression slot and detects which layer you are on in device RAM. Haven’t found a way to detect the current layer outside of this way, but if you have an idea, please let me know.

Current features are being able to see which layer you are on via the tray and a HUD style popup which you can disable entirely or by layer. I’ve only tried this with the RP2040 board and not sure if it would work with any other boards, but in theory it should work.

The most I’ve seen the program take up RAM wise was 2.5MB. Also disclaimer, this was built with Claude. I did review the code to the best of my abilities, but coding in Rust is still fairly new to me.
